The British F2b Bristol Fighter had an inauspicious and most disastrous beginning almost sealing it's fate as a costly failure.  The F2b was originally used as an observation machine and suffered greatly from German single seat fighters but the F2b was improved upon and used in the fighter role in which it excelled. The Bristol F2b had enough speed, maneuverability, and firepower to hold it´s own against any German fighter  By the time of the Armistice some 3,100 of these great machines had been built. 1 model aircraft made from 1/16 inch Ash wood, included 1 flight stand made of 1/8 inch Birch plywood and two magnets. Some assembly required. Bristol F.2 Fighter (Wikipedia)
