Alongside the Fokker Dr I the Sopwith Camel is probably the most famous of the World War I flying machines, but both of these aircraft were dangerous and difficult to fly.  The Sopwith Camel is noted as the highest killer of German machines from among all of the British aircraft but it also killed more British pilots than any other allied plane.  Over eighty percent of the Sopwith camel's weight was located in the front third of the machine and this combined with it's powerful rotary engine gave this machine the deadly ability to turn with frightening rapidity to the right, so much so that in the unskilled hands of an inexperienced pilot the turn could result in an uncontrollable spin that was almost impossible to pull out of.  Once mastered however the Sopwith Camel was undeniably one of the greatest aircraft of the war.
