The mon (family crest) of the Ashikaga and of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.  Since Hideyoshi was born of peasant stock it is suggested that he took the mon of the Ashikaga as to it's importance in samurai history.  The Ashikaga came to great power by Ashikaga Takauji the first of the Ashikaga Shoguns.  He served as a general of the Kamakura Shogunate but sided with the exiled Emperor against Kamakura.  Kamakura fell against the combined might of The Emperor, Nitta Yoshisada, Kusunoki Masashige and Ashikaga Takauji.  The Emperor Go-Daigo's regime was unpolpular and fell apart rapidly, Takauji turned against his former allies and won out becoming the first of the Ashikaga Shoguns'.  This line continued with his son and further descendants until they ran afoul of Oda Nobunaga who abolished the Shogunate.

Almost all mon can be found to be used by many different samurai throughout the centuries.
