The mon (family crest) of the Ii, led by the head of the family Ii Naomasa, one of Tokugawa Ieyasu's greatest and most loyal samurai, one of his "Four Guardians" of the Tokugawa. The Ii are well known for their "Red Devils" a unit of samurai and ashigaru in their impressive red-lacquered armor. Ii Naomasa himself was known as Akaoni or (Red Devil). The Ii were almost always the first into battle and it has been suggested that the Ii started the battle of Sekigahara charging ahead of the front lines with one of Tokugawa's sons, when asked why he was advancing past the front lines, he shouted back that he was just showing the Great Lord's son the battlefield, the rest of the Tokugawa force had no choice but to follow. Naomasa was wounded by teppo fire while leading a charge into the rearguard of the Shimazu, it is said that after the battle Tokugawa Ieyasu bandaged Ii's wound personally.
Almost all mon can be found to be used by many different samurai throughout the centuries.
