The mon (family crest) of the awesome Tokugawa, brought to greatness by the founder and first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616).  Tokugawa Ieyasu began as Matsudaira Takechiyo son of the daimyo of Mikawa Matsudaira Hirotada and in his youth was hostage to another clan, a very common practice to "solidify agreements & alliances in the Sengoku Jidai.  Tokugawa eventually returned to his home and led his clan to greatness.  Allying himself with Oda Nobunaga Tokugawa was able to greatly improve his clans strengths and upon the death of Nobunaga came to blows against Toyotomi Hideyoshi, being to tough and obstinate for Hideyoshi to defeat the two settle into an uneasy peace that would eventually lead to an alliance.  After Toyotomi's death Tokugawa came up against Ishida Mutsunari whom he defeated, captured and killed.  In 1603 Tokugawa Ieyasu recieved the title of Shogun by the Emperor Go-Yozei.  In 1615 Tokugawa Ieyasu was on the battlefield again at the age of 74 during the Osaka campaign that lasted the better part of a year he defeated Toyotomi's heir Toyotomi Hideyori.  Ieyasu died peacefully the following year leaving behind The Tokugawa Shogunate that would rule Japan for the next 250 years.

Almost all mon can be found to be used by many different samurai throughout the centuries.
